Ping came to the United States from China in 2017. He has a wife and four children. He enjoys American culture and media and has improved his English language skills by watching TV and studying independently.
Ping’s short-term literacy goals are to improve his oral English language skills and improve his vocabulary. He earned his bachelor’s degree in China, and one of his long-term goals is to start his university studies again. The other long-term goal is to become a US citizen.
Lyndsay (Volunteer) and Ping (Student) have been working together since November 2022. They have met in person at the Fayetteville Free Library and remotely. They continue to meet in person to catch up and reevaluate his sessions. Lyndsay incorporates articles with videos and podcasts into his sessions to build listening comprehension. They listen, then discuss. Ping’s lessons are current and engaging, giving Ping plenty of opportunities to improve his vocabulary and work on grammar and speaking skills.
“Despite having four young kids and a full-time job, I have never met anyone more dedicated and determined than Ping. He constantly asks for more to do and if we can meet for more sessions weekly.”
