NEW VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Ryan

LiteracyCNY’s Digital Literacy Coordinator, Lydia, recently sat down and spoke with Ryan about his decision to become a digital literacy volunteer and share his time assisting his community with their technology needs. Ryan is a new digital literacy volunteer at the Fayetteville Free Library.

Ryan enjoys meeting new people and helping them come to a solution for their problem. He found that this opportunity works well with the skills he has, and appreciates the flexibility, as he works full-time and has kids at home. Ryan has always had a love for teaching others and sought out an opportunity that could help him do just that.

“This is my first-time volunteering. I enjoy helping people. I was looking around for how to volunteer in the area. This stuck out to me because I understand how hard it must be for someone who didn’t grow up with all of this [new technology].”

When asked if he knew of the digital divide, Ryan responded, “I knew of the disconnect between people and technology” but he didn’t realize the scale and impact it has around the country. Ryan also learned that the official name for this phenomenon he described was in fact called the digital divide. He then explained that those in his life who work with computers every day sometimes still need help because technology is ever changing and evolving.

Don’t worry about what you don’t know. Take advantage of the services, especially the free ones, available to you locally. I want to help you develop your skills!”

Ryan encourages the community to seek help for any digital questions because there is always someone willing to help and guide them through it.

When Ryan is not volunteering, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends. Additionally, Ryan is an avid sports lover, and you can even catch him on the greens playing golf during the warmer seasons.
